The working life of a Practice Development Manager

Jude Edwards is the Practice Development Manager at St Ann’s Hospice in Greater Manchester. Here she explains what her day-to-day role involves and what she loves the most about it.

I am a relatively new recruit to the hospice sector.  I have worked in a clinical setting in the past in the Diabetes Centre in York, and whilst I was there I completed a PGCE which led to my teaching in Further Education in Greater Manchester for 12 years.

My role at St Ann’s brings together both those positions, and since joining in January 2016 I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to grips with what the hospice sector has to offer.

I strongly believe that all hospices should be collaborating with others more than ever, and that we should always be endeavouring to reach as many people as possible with our services.  In fact, we were pleased to be recognised in a recent report by the CQC for the outreach work that we have been carrying out at St Ann’s to do just that. 

A large part of my daily role is to lead on service development.  There is no doubt that the care we deliver is beyond excellent, but I believe that we should be able to offer this to even more people in the wider communities of Greater Manchester. 

My team has been looking to engage more groups that traditionally have not felt that hospice care is for them, and I am proud to say we have been making progress by collaborating with the Alzheimer’s society, homeless communities in Manchester, the prison service, and with transgender groups to try to improve awareness, demystify hospice care, and improve access.  We have also been leading dementia awareness training which as we all know, has become increasingly important for those working in the healthcare sector.

An extension of this outreach is that we also develop and deliver palliative care training and education outside of the hospice to nursing and residential homes, and domiciliary care teams.  This is a part of my role that I particularly enjoy and it is great to have a day where we deliver training and see the difference it will make to the people those professionals are caring for.

I also spend time working with my team to support students who come to the hospice, including the coordination of nursing student mentors.  We recently started to offer placements to year 12 and 13 students, and we are thrilled that so many are showing an interest in hospice nursing.

A large part of the work we do is around in-house training for all nursing staff.  This includes everything from medicine management to mandatory training.  I spend time looking at processes in the hospice to make us more efficient, and to ensure we are able to continue to deliver innovative and exemplary services for people across Greater Manchester.

Though no two days are the same at the hospice, I can honestly say that I really love the work I do here.  Seeing the difference that projects can make on the individuals who access – or would benefit from accessing – our care is what makes it all worthwhile, and I am looking forward to working with my team to continue to do so in the future.
