Enhancing the expectation of healing: Cicely Saunders Annual Lecture now available online

23 July 2015

Dr Eduardo Bruera, Professor and FT McGraw Chair in the Treatment of Cancer, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, delivered the Cicely Saunders Annual Lecture on the 10th anniversary of the death of Dame Cicely.

The Lecture, entitled ‘Clinical interventions to enhance the expectation of healing: continuing on the pathway of Dame Cicely’ is now available to view online.

Dr Bruera thanked the Cicely Saunders Institute for inviting him to give the lecture, paying tribute to Dame Cicely for "guiding and inspiring" all of those working in palliative care today. He reminded those listening of the importance of considering aspects of the person's life apart from their disease. He presented a review of clinical research on how the delivery of palliative care can be more effective by subtle interventions such as:

  • making changes in the physical environment, such as adding ambient music or removing a waiting room,
  • measuring symptoms
  • differences in posture (e.g.: sitting vs. standing)
  • communication style
  • aspects of the physical exam
  • giving prompt sheets; and
  • audio recording and phone care interventions.

You can access the full lecture online on the Cicely Saunders Institute Youtube channel.
