Hospice vice president becomes first female bishop of London

04 January 2018

Rt Reverend Sarah Mullally DBE, Vice President of Hospicecare in Devon, has been announced as the first female Bishop of London.

Mullally was formerly Chief Nursing Officer and Director of Patient Experience for England, and has also been a non-executive Director of the English Board of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting.

She was a non-executive director of the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust from 2005 to 2012, after which she took on a non-executive role at Salisbury NHS Foundation.

In 2005, Mullally became a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in recognition for her contribution to nursing and midwifery.

She was ordained as a deacon in 2001 and as a priest the following year.  She became team rector of Sutton Team Ministry at St Nicholas' Church in Sutton in 2006.

In addition to her parish work, Mullally is involved  in an Anglican clergy leadership programme and sits on the Church of England's Dioceses Commission. In 2012 she was installed as Canon Treasurer at Salisbury Cathedral.

In 2015 she became the first woman in the Church of England to lead an ordination service.

Commenting on the appointment, Glynis Atherton, Chief Executive of Hospicecare said:

“We are absolutely delighted to hear this news.  Bishop Sarah has been a committed Vice President to Hospiscare and has been a tremendous support.  Huge congratulations and we all wish her well.”
