the Dreamers ... dying people talk about their wishes, dreams

  • Dreamer Lloyd Hammond's widow with PCV conference MC Julie McCrossin and creator Pippa Wischer at the Dreamers launch

The Palliative Care Victoria Conference will be well documented largely due to the tireless efforts of photographer Pippa Wischer.

Pippa has been everywhere over the course of the conference, her memorable images of participants – dignitaries, keynote speakers, delegates, PCV staff and volunteers all benefiting from her sympathetic treatment through the lens.

But nowhere has the love of her craft been more apparent than in her book, the Dreamers, launched at the end of the full first day of the conference by PCV Vice Chair Rachel Bovenizer. Rachel said the PCV board didn’t need any prompting to support the project once members saw Pippa’s proposal, such was the intensity of the message it sent.

The launch took on another dimension when Dorothy, the widow of one of the book’s subjects Lloyd Hammond, took to the stage with her extended family to tell the story of the couple’s 13 year romance and their marriage shortly before Lloyd died.

In the Dreamers, Pippa tells the story through words and images of 40 terminally ill people at various stages of end of life. Each respondent contributes his or her thoughts on life, death and dreams, their responses heart rending and achingly beautiful in their simplicity and sincerity.

Since the book went to print only a short while ago, 20 of the subjects have died. Pippa has commemorated the book to her mother who died from the effects of Churg Strauss syndrome, an auto-immune disease.

the Dreamers has been published by Palliative Care Victoria. Contact PCV for details on how to purchase.
