The Hospice Africa Uganda annual report 2011 -2012 has just been published.

The report looks at achievement and progress during a year of restructuring and transition, and refers to the first full year of morphine production by hospices in Uganda on behalf of the Ugandan government. 

In a letter accompanying the report, Zena Bernacca, chief executive director of Hospice Africa Uganda wrote: 

“We have managed to bring the new team together and address the backlog of reports, reviews of policy, systems etc as well as implement the first full year of oral morphine production on behalf of the government of Uganda who want to ensure access to pain relief to all who need it in Uganda.  Whilst it has been hard work for all concerned, we have managed to bring up the standards of production to what has been required by the National Drugs Authority who are very happy with our progress.  We are working well with partners to tackle the issues of distribution which need further attention.”

The report includes a chapter on the Palliative Care Association of Uganda, citing among the organisation’s highlights the successful lobbying for recognition of palliative care in the nurses “scheme of work”  and using advocacy and mentorship to integrate palliative care into the Uganda People’s Defence Force. 

Reports from Little Hospice Hoima and Mobile Hospice Mbarara are included as well as reports from the Institute (Education Department) and from International Programmes.
